Lesson 8 of 8
Knowing and negotiating your worth
6 min read
Earning well isn't only about working hard — it's also about knowing what your work is worth and being able to have the conversation about it. Salary negotiation feels daunting to almost everyone, but it's a learnable skill, and it's one of the highest-return things you can do: a successful negotiation compounds across every future raise and pension contribution built on that higher base.
It starts with knowing your market value — what people with your skills, experience and location are genuinely paid. This isn't guesswork; it comes from salary data, job adverts, industry surveys and honest conversations with peers. Walking into a pay discussion with a well-researched range, rather than a hopeful number, changes the tone entirely: you're making a case, not asking a favour.
The conversation itself works best when it's calm, specific and evidence-based. Rather than "I'd like more money," a strong case sounds like "based on my results this year and the market rate for this role, I'd like to discuss moving my salary to X." Focus on the value you bring and the evidence for it. And remember that pay isn't the only lever — if salary can't move, a bigger pension contribution, extra holiday, flexible working or a clear path to a future rise all have real worth.
Why this matters for you. The difference between accepting the first number and negotiating well can be enormous over a career, because everything compounds from your current salary. Knowing your real take-home at different salary levels — so you can set a target and see what each offer truly means — is part of that preparation. mySal's compare and simulator tools help you walk into that conversation knowing exactly what you're aiming for and why.
Where to go next. You've completed Earning & Payslips. If you earn any income outside a standard employed job, the Self-Employed & Business track goes deeper into managing your own earnings, expenses and tax. And the Saving & Budgeting track helps you make the most of the money you've now learned to understand and grow.
